Recertifying CCIE with continuing education credits - For Cisco employees!

First and foremost....what is this about?

Traditionally to recertify in any CCIE track one must pass a CCIE written or lab.  This is a cumbersome process.  Cisco introduced continuing education credits to allow individuals to further one's knowledge through training to recertify his or her existing certification(s).

The purpose of this document is to explain how one might go about this process as a Cisco employee (without paying for the courses and/or continuing education--it isn't free for non-employees).  For what it's worth, I had a friend who is not with Cisco follow this process and it cost him (his company) ~$1,500.

Ok, now go here: ce.cisco.com

From here we can see a number of things:

First thing we can see is that to recertify the CCIE we need 100 credits.  I currently have 64 credits and need an additional 36.  Also, I can see that I have 172 days left to certify.

To view the full catalog of courses you can select "Earn X Credits," or select "Item Catalog" at the top of the screen.

Ok..Cisco folks..this stuff here is not free.  To view the catalog of courses available to Cisco employees..go here: https://collaborativeknowledge.learn.cisco/index.html

Once you enter your Cisco email, click on the Learning>Training Catalog

Select "CDLL Infrastructure Bundle"

From here we'll see a list of all the courses that are available.

FAQ:
How do I "pass" the course?
There are a series of sections with videos and a knowledge check at each section.  There are unlimited attempts on these knowledge checks.  You may also face a number of scenarios.  Once you've completed all the section knowledge checks you'll receive a certificate of completion.

When you have the certificate, go back to ce.cisco.com and select the "Submit Items" button.  You'll have to upload the certificate and enter the start date of the course.

Once you submit for review it takes ~48 hours to receive confirmation.  While this is under review your donut chart on ce.cisco.com will show "pending."

How do I find out how many credits each course will give me?
Go to the catalog and look up the items that are in the CDLL Infrastructure Bundle.  Or..this is a list from a point in time.  This may be incorrect as new courses are added/removed.

How long do the courses take?
They take as long as you let it take.  I've been working on the content for ~4-5 months now.  I'm not in a huge hurry as I don't feel the need to cram as I would with studying for a written exam.  I'd say I spend at most 20-30 mins a day when I'm actually working on it (maybe 2-3 days a week).

Is this better than the written?
In my opinion, absolutely.  The content I've reviewed this far is fantastic and the videos are consumable (<10 minutes each).  I'd much rather watch these videos than stress over any new evolving technologies section!
